Never mind all this nay saying in the Daily Mail, the BBC has fought back with a real scoop, revealing:
- English holidaymakers are turning to drink on their holidays
- Drinking and socialising is a key part of most summer holidays
- "Prolonged periods of regular excessive [alcohol] consumption is harmful to your body.”
We already know about Boozy Brits in Spain. We’ve already heard Latvia’s interior minister bemoaning drunken “English pigs”. Is this really a shock?
Of course, it’s down to Department of Health PR. And buried under the eye-wateringly obvious headline findings are some thought-provoking stats. The average British holidaymaker, for example, drinks 80 alcoholic drinks throughout their trip – that’s well over 200 units. Which is rather a lot.
The problem is, scrambling for a news hook, someone has tried to make this stick for summer – in a really anodyne way. And sadly, with a headline like ‘English turn to booze on holiday’, it definitely misses the mark.
